    When raw water flows downward through the filter media, suspended solids in the water are intercepted on the surface of the filter layer through adsorption and mechanical interception. As the water flows into the middle of the filter layer, the sand particles in the filter media are arranged more densely, giving fine particles in the water more chances to collide with the sand grains. Flocs and suspended matters in the water adhere to the surface of sand particles, and impurities are trapped in the filter media layer, thus obtaining clarified water quality. The suspended solid content of the filtered effluent can be controlled below 5 mg/L.

    According to the turbidity and organic matter content of raw water, determine the filling amount and particle size of quartz sand and activated carbon. Generally, if the raw water turbidity is high, the particle size of quartz sand can be appropriately smaller; if the organic matter content is high, the filling amount of activated carbon shall be increased.

    Select the appropriate filter specification according to the treated water flow and filtration velocity, with the conventional filtration velocity ranging from 10 to 15 m/h.

    Determine whether it is necessary to add auxiliary equipment such as disinfection devices based on water quality requirements and subsequent treatment processes.

    Select the appropriate filter type and material in combination with on-site installation conditions and maintenance requirements.
